B RIDE - CAR ASSISTED, GLASSON DOCK
SUNDAY 3 APRIL 2011
Picked Ray up at Westhoughton as the rain was beginning to fall with a vengenence, the forecast had not been good, heavy showers, again.
The plan was to meet at the leisure Centre car park at Garstang, driving down the M61 towards the M6 through a very heavy shower we could just about make out a rainbow.
Garstang, still raining "don't take the bikes off we might be going home, lets see if anyone else arrives"
Car arrives in next parking bay, "Is this Bolton Clarion"? It was Peter Graham, what a nice surprise.
Shortly after Ken then Jane and Peter Lane arrived, and the rain stopped!!
We set off following Lancs Cycleway 90 through Scorton crisscrossing the M6 as we gently climbed up to the Quernmore Cross Road before heading on to Caton. The countryside here on the western edge of the Trough is beautiful with the fields very green at this time of the year.
Dropping down into Caton, across the main road to join the cycleway to Lancaster, a slight diversion at Crook of Lune due to one of the bridges being closed. This cycleway running down the edge of the river is excellent with a tarmaced surface which puts most roads to shame, and it has street lights.
One unusal and unplanned breakdown, Ken's chain broke, luckily be prepared Pete Lane had a spare link with which we were able to get back underway.
The ride into Lancaster was superb, dropped down on to the Millenium Bridge taking the first exit onto another cycleway heading for Glasson Dock, virtually traffic free all the way from Caton to Glasson.
Stopped for lunch at Cafe de Lune, sat outside in the sunshine where we were joined by Bernard who was looking for the A ride.
Consensus was to ride directly back to Garstang via Cockerham, people had commitments and Ken was concerned about his bike.
A really nice ride, in better weather than we expected, with a welcomed guest rider. A good day. Report by Peter Moore
